Under the direction of the Dean or Assistant Dean, Adjunct Nursing Faculty is responsible for the supervision and teaching of students during the clinical placement portion of nursing courses and for assisting the student in achieving clinical course objectives. Service to the college, community, health system, and profession are integral aspects of the Adjunct Faculty role.
1.General Scope of Responsibilities
a.Responsible to support/facilitate student learning in both the classroom and clinical setting.
b.Develops annual goals for program improvement; revise and update program curriculum using current evidence-based material; review all student policies and revise policies related to admission, progression, graduation, standardized testing and remediation.
c.Practice excellence in teaching and instruction.
d.Demonstrate evidence of professional growth and academic currency.
e.Carry out the responsibilities specific to his/her area, department and/or program.
2.Teaching and Instruction
a.Begin class on time in an orderly, organized fashion.
b.Be courteous and approachable to students, and maintain their confidentiality.
c.Follow approved policies and procedures while conducting all instructional activities.
d.Use effective motivational techniques to help stimulate students’ personal desire to learn the subject/skill(s).
e.Constantly strive to improve instructional approaches through: Self-reflection on teaching practices, observation and study of new instructional techniques, the use of technology where applicable to enhance the learning environment, continual revision/updating of course content for relevance, and attendance at department meetings, committee meetings, and conference to improve instructional practices.
3.Professional Development and Faculty Development
a.Faculty are required to engage in professional and faculty development activities, as outlined in the Brown Mackie College Faculty Development Policy, which requires: (a) Full-time faculty to have a minimum of 24 hours per year of faculty development, (b) Part-time faculty to have a minimum of 12 hours per year of faculty development and (c) Adjunct faculty to document appropriate in-service and/or professional growth activities based on teaching schedules.
b.Remain academically and experientially qualified in area(s) of expertise through professional/faculty development activities.
4.Area of Departmental Responsibilities
a.Be knowledgeable about and abide to College, nursing program and Board of Nursing policies/rules, including accurate and timely submission of all reports, grades and paper work.
b.Actively participate in department committees to aid in program enhancement and ongoing systematic evaluation.
c.Attend all meetings scheduled by the administration for planning and orientation.
6.Community Service (optional)
•Hold a minimum of a baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) with a clinical component from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree in the science of nursing (MSN) is preferred.
•Possess and maintain a current, undisciplined RN license in Missouri.
•Have at least two years of experience as a professional nurse providing direct patient care, with five (5) years or more preferred.
•Have at least two (2) years of full-time college or university teaching experience or relative experience is preferred.
•Have academic preparation and experientially qualified in the areas of responsibility for the nursing program.
•Be able to analyze and interpret accreditation criteria, state agency regulations and nursing practice organization standards as they relate to student learning opportunities.
•Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
•Have strong interpersonal skills with student and staff populations.
•Demonstrate organizational, prioritization and self-motivation skills.
•Demonstrate proficiency with the use of standard business productivity, computer database management and Internet applications on personal commuters.
•Demonstrate the ability to respect students and colleagues.
•Have the ability to effectively present information to faculty, academic and campus leaders, corporate leaders, and public groups as required.
•Have the ability to read, interpret and implement accreditation criteria and state agency regulations.
•Have the ability to resolve inquiries and complaints from students, faculty, regulatory agencies, clinical partners, and/or public groups.
